Cypress Gardens is Florida's oldest theme park. The vast gardens were constructed as an antebellum camera-ready vision straight out of a Hollywood set. At one point, more Kodak film was sold to tourists at Cypress Gardens than at any other location in the country. Southern Belles have been waving and posing for the cameras at Cypress Gardens since 1940.

In this body of work, I have photographed the Southern Belles interacting with the lush and strange setting of Cypress Gardens. The fans they hold show a photographic image of belles at Cypress Gardens. The fans were originally produced in the 1950s and sold to tourists. I reproduced these fans as a way of inserting them back into their original context.
